Het Gazebo hosta season winds down

Today was the last Weeding Wednesday for 2022 

It was another succesful year at Het Gazebo in Diepenheim

thanks to all the hours the volunteers put in ! 

Sunny, 10 C, as the last weeds and leaves were raked this morning!

A warming bowl of hoemmade pumpkin soup for lunch

and a tour of  Drawing Center Diepenheim (click here)

rounded off the day ! 

See you back at Het Gazebo in 2023 !

 

There's still time

to enjoy beautiful Autumn colours at Het Gazebo !

Wild mushrooms and a salamander full of life amongst the hostas

 and leaves surprised the volunteers on this sunny day!

When you view Het Gazebo from the look out Monomet 

the veins of this abstract hosta art form are clearly seen !

It's mid November and the weeds are so good as gone !

 

It's that time of year !

A chilly Autumnal day in November at Het Gazebo !

Brrr ! The volunteers were dressed warm and used 

different tactics to avoid contact with the ground while weeding !

There's more leaves on the ground that on the trees !

Hostas are few and far between ! 

But there was warm coffee and home made cake ! 

 

A very blustery dry sunny day !

The Autumn leaves from the Red Beech trees at Het Gazebo

 are blowing around covering the hosta beds for the Winter!

A great day to get out and volunteer !

Those butternut squash in the photo you might ask?

It grows here in The Netherlands as well !

One of the volunteers grows it at her allotment and brought a few to share !

 

 

Autumm vacation that feels like Summer !

You would think I would be writing about

" a chill in the air " at the end of October " !

But not this week ! It's a gorgeous 20 C !

Next week the calendar reads November !

What a chilly morning at Het Gazebo ! 3 C ! 

Soon the sun warmed ! 14 C !

Longer nights, shorter days, misty mornings ...

Autumn days adding another phase to the hosta garden !

We saw 2 C on the thermometer this morning !

There's a chill in the air and mist above the land !

The colour change of Autumn is speeding up at Het gazebo !

The sun still has a bit of warmth, so 16 C by midday !

Life's not all gone. There is still a lot of new activity

amongst the hostas. New blooms and snails !

The volunteers really enjoyed their warm coffee !

 

It's October at Het Gazebo !

Autumn ! October is starting off quite mild !

Hostas are still in bloom and green leaves still seen between the gold !

and there was still a lot of colour at Het Gazebo to enjoy !

The volunteers chose to get rid of some green!

The hostas at Het Gazebo have really filled in the spaces !

But, if you look closely ....

Snails ! Slugs ! They have really given it their all !

Remember, with hostas you have the roots !

These plants will grow back next year with fresh new leaves !

Mid September and a few hostas are in bloom !

Many are in seed and quite a few are looking lacey !

The group of volunteers that accept the challenge

joining in for weeding Wednesdays are super ! 

 

Then it rained !

Last nights thunder and lightning storm also 

brought along about 24 mm of rain, depending where you live !

That amount of rain was soaked up quickly at Het Gazebo!

By the time the volunteers arrived there wasn't much to see !  

Today was a beautiful sunny and dry 24 C September day in Diepenheim !

Feels more like Autumn !

22 C, a light breeze, more shadow but not fewer weeds !

Warm weather, shorter days and cooler nights,

the sun lower over the horizon !

The beech trees are letting go of their leaves,

Hostas are turning shades of autumnal golds and browns

but there are still a few hostas in bloom attracting the bees !

It's still a very warm and humid 32 C in Diepenheim though! 

Thanks to the volunteers spending their morning here !

 

 

Just before the rains came !

It has been quite the heatwave here !

The Netherlands experienced the warmest August 14th on record !

The humidity rose just before the weather changed !

It was quite muggy weeding conditions for the volunteers today !

Look at all the weed free paths !

There are still a few weeks to enjoy Het Gazebo before Autumn arrives!

 

Even the snails were looking for shade !

A tropical week ahead ! 5 contiuous days above 30 C ! 

We call that a heatwave here in The Netherlands !

The volunteers are keeping up with their weekly 

visits to Het Gazebo in Diepenheim even in this heat !

Woo hoo ! An improved irrigation system thanks to a new pump !

It's August and a very warm and dry Summer here and in Europe !

But still, there are those slugs and snails that seem to manage

just fine what ever the weather !

It's a sunny breezy 20 C at Het Gazebo in Diepenheim !

Gazeboday for the volunteers involves a lot of weeding

and taking care of Het Gazebo where necassary.

It's warm at Het Gazebo !

Weather warnings for extreme warm temperatures in effect ! 

Yesterday was code orange! Today code yellow !

30 C in Diepenheim today = An early start for the volunteers!

Watering Het Gazebo by hand today does take a bit of time !

Here's hoping for the predicted thunder showers

that will bring lots of rain and cooler temps later today! 

 

Made in the shade !

It soon warmed up to 28 C !

That's quite warm if you volunteer for weeding at Het Gazebo ! 

Good thing these plants also grow in the shade !

Celebrating Birthdays means cake for the volunteers at Het Gazebo !

It's July ! Het Gazebo ... abstract Hosta leaf living art 

is looking good after years of intense volunteer work !

That work hasn't stopped yet !

Weeding the wide path betwen the rows of beech trees is a huge task 

that the volunteers managed today !

Rain and warm weather passed over Het Gazebo since last time we visited !

 Today was another warm 27 C day in Diepenheim!

With the weekly visits by the volunteers

the weeds are not taking over, don't have a chance !

Coffee and cake for all the volunteers today !

Volunteers were busy weeding as well as answering questions

from the groups of cyclists passing by

 and sharing a bit of the history behind

 this abstract hosta growing art form !

removing almost all the weeds in sight !

Sunny days with enough water and they grow as well !

All that rain we have had has really helped the hostas

as well as the weeds! Thanks to the volunteers 

for keeping it looking so presentable !
